Campione di Tremosine sits on a small alluvial fan formed by the river with the same name, at the foot of the steep mountain. In 1896 Giacomo Feltrinelli promoted the construction of a cotton mill. Soon, houses for the workers, a school, a theater, and a church were built and vegetable gardens were planted. An industrial town had quickly sprung up, and the most important buildings still stand today. When the cotton mill was closed down in 1981, the people of Campione had to invent a new economy, which turned out to be tourism. Thanks to the strong wind that blows constantly, windsurfing and sailing have been developed and attract many enthusiasts every summer.
